Japanese Cultural Society of Maui's 2nd Annual Kite Festival
Let's go fly a kite! Public invited to fly kites at Keopuolani Park
KAHULUI, Hawaii - The public is invited to the second annual Kite Festival hosted by the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Keopuolani Park Field #8, located right below the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
This event is free. Kite kits to decorate will be available for a $5 donation to the nonprofit. Prizes will be available to the best decorated kite.
Attendees may also bring their own kites - big or small, traditional or modern, and see them in action at the festival.
"It was wonderful to see our children participate in the festival last year so we decided to hold it again," said Brian Sato, president of JCSM. "But the event is open to all ages, as this is an opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy flying kites."
The mission of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui is to perpetuate the Japanese culture in the community. Kite flying in Japan dates back in the 16th century as a custom to pray for good health and a bright future. Kite festivals in Japan held today include hundreds of large kites - a display of craftsmanship and skill.
