EXHIBIT: Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami
Schaefer International Gallery; Tue – Sun 10am - 5 pm (Also open before Castle Theater shows and during intermission)
Above the Fold presents the work of nine renowned artists from four different continents, working in six different countries. The exhibit is an engaging, thought-provoking, and interdisciplinary look at the modern advances of origami through contemporary artwork that demonstrates the extraordinary artistic achievements being made in the world of contemporary origami. These artists have been pushing the boundaries of origami—the Japanese art of paper folding— to elevate what was once considered a children’s craft into a sophisticated global art form. In their hands, this art form has been evolving in remarkable new directions, including sculpture, large-scale installations, and conceptual works that express contemporary social, political, and aesthetic ideas.
This exhibition is supported in part by Matson® with additional funding by Hawai‘i Tourism Authority and the County of Maui Office of Economic Development. Above the Fold is curated by Meher McArthur and tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.
