Maui 4th Annual Fiber Art Conference 9am-5pm Aug 31-Sept 3/22 Kaʻanapali Beach Hotel

Strengthening Ties To Our Ancestors

Lāhainā, Maui Hawaii – The Ka'anapali Beach Hotel. Kauluhiwaolele Maui Fiber Arts Conference August 31 – September 3, 2022. The conference will consist of four days of intense instructions in the weaving crafts done by over twenty (20) kumu from throughout Hawaii. During the conference, one hundred fifty (150) students will learn traditional Hawaiian weaving techniques and styles; hala, 'ie'ie, kōkō puʻupuʻu and ‘upena from over 20 kumu (master practitioners) of this honored ancient art.

The theme this year is Hāwele’ike which translates to bind or make fast and ‘ike figuratively refers to the piko. Hāwele is also a type of net lashing for huewai (water gourds), as well as a type of kapa, two art forms are being taught at the conference. Recognizing the multiple ways we utilize Hawaiian plant material, eaves bark, sedges and roots are just some of the fibers used to weave, twill, twine knot and precious creations.

Through the teachings at the conference of the various fiber arts, the cord that binds us to our kūpuna (ancestors) is strengthened. Life begins at the piko. As each student begins their project, they breathe life into these ancient arts while adding another strand to their kumu (teacher) geneology. As students hāwele their pieces, they impart their mana into each piece, making it an extension of themselves, a remembrance of the people, the time and the place of this special gathering.

Local favorites will be served at the culminating celebration. Students are encouraged to wear and display items created throughout the conference. Featuring local musicians between the silent and live auctions hosted that evening.

Proceeds go towards supporting kumu and student scholarships for continued perpetuation of the art.
