The Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center presents the 2026 Solo Artist Exhibition, featuring two concurrent exhibitions by Maui artist Jane Mount and O‘ahu-based scientist and artist Michelle Schwengel-Regala. On view from March 20 through May 15, 2026, the exhibition highlights two distinct bodies of work that explore themes of connection, ecology, and the systems that shape our understanding of the world.
Through the Hui’s annual Solo Artist Exhibition series, two artists are selected through a statewide open call and invited to develop and present cohesive bodies of work within the Hui’s gallery spaces. This program offers artists the opportunity to engage in every stage of exhibition planning and installation, challenging them to produce innovative and deeply considered work in a professional gallery setting.
Maui-based artist Jane Mount presents Particles, a series of textile collages that reflect on the vast interconnectedness of the universe. Using layered fabrics, pattern, and color, Mount explores how humans attempt to make sense of existence—through both scientific discovery and mythology. Her work considers our place within a larger cosmic system while acknowledging the limits of our tools and understanding.
In the adjoining gallery, Michelle Schwengel-Regala presents In/Finite Loop, a mixed-media exhibition shaped by her background as both a scientist and artist. Drawing on her long-standing interest in conservation biology, Schwengel-Regala’s work focuses in part on the recovery of the ‘alal?—the Hawaiian crow once declared extinct in the wild. Through fiber sculptures and delicate metalpoint illustrations, she highlights endangered species and ecosystems, inviting viewers to reflect on their role in supporting conservation efforts and protecting fragile habitats.
The exhibition opens on Friday, March 20 with a public Artist Walkthrough at 4:00pm, followed by an Opening Reception from 5:00–7:00pm. Community members are invited to meet the artists and experience both exhibitions during the opening celebration.
The 2026 Solo Artist Exhibition is supported in part by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority Community Enrichment Program.
