Roots Reborn presents Dia de los Muertos 4-10pm Oct 25

Roots Reborn proudly presents our third annual Día de los Muertos celebration, a community event honoring one of Latin America's most meaningful traditions: a day to celebrate and remember those who have died. What began as a small gathering has grown into one of our most anticipated community touchpoints, and this year we're building on that momentum to bring even more of Maui together in shared culture, memory, and joy.

The evening will open with authentic flavors from local food trucks and a mercadito (market) featuring crafts and artisan goods from community vendors, giving local makers a platform to share their work and connect directly with attendees. Live music, cultural performances, and dancing will bring the spirit of Día de los Muertos to life throughout the night, offering a joyful, immersive experience rooted in tradition.

At the heart of the celebration is our communal altar, where families and community members are invited to add photos, mementos, and offerings for loved ones who have passed. This shared ofrenda is one of the most beloved parts of the event: it turns individual grief into a collective act of remembrance, and it gives people across cultures and generations a place to grieve, honor, and connect together.

For families with young children, our keiki zone, organized in partnership with local community organizations, will offer hands-on activities designed to introduce kids to the traditions and meaning behind the holiday in a fun, age-appropriate way.

The purpose of this event goes beyond celebration. Roots Reborn works year-round to build trust with Maui's immigrant and migrant communities, and cultural events like this one are a cornerstone of that work. They create a low-barrier, welcoming space where families who may not otherwise engage with our organization can experience Roots Reborn as a community partner first. Our goals are threefold: to honor and preserve a tradition that carries deep meaning for our Latinx and broader immigrant community, to create a joyful shared space that brings neighbors of all backgrounds together, and to strengthen the relationships that allow Roots Reborn to walk alongside families long after the celebration ends.

Most of all, this event is about connection: bringing people together across culture, language, and loss, and reminding our community that they belong here.
